RésuméThe pleuronectiform fossil record is being here cladistically reviewed. This new exam of fossil flatfishes provides data that document some events of the history of the group. Former attributions of fossils to the Pleuronectiformes, or to a pleuronectiform family, are confirmed or invalidated. Minimum dates for the appearance of certain families are proposed : Soleidae existed as early as the Lutetian (Middle Eocene), the rise of the Bothidae occurred in the Middle Miocene and not in the Eocene, as established before. But, because some Recent flatfish families are not yet cladistically defined, many fossils cannot be placed in any pleuronectiform families. Consequently, our understanding of the history of the group is still foggy, but works on Recent species are needed so that some fossil can be placed more accurately and some parts of the history of the order can be resolved.
